This link is safe to share over WhatsApp or email — you can read this before you have an account, and you can check your camera, position and mic any time, with nothing recorded.
Before you start
- A laptop or desktop computer — not a phone or tablet. The assessment requires sharing your screen, which isn't possible on mobile browsers, so phones and tablets are blocked from starting it at all.
- Your government ID (Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, or passport) — you'll photograph it during the test.
- A quiet, well-lit room where you won't be interrupted, and a stable internet connection.
- 45 minutes, uninterrupted. Once you start, the clock runs continuously until you submit or time runs out — it cannot be paused.
What gets recorded
While the assessment is running, we record:
- Your camera — continuously, to confirm you (and only you) are answering.
- Your microphone — continuously, as a background check; it never stops you or warns you in the moment.
- Your screen — continuously, to confirm you aren't using other tabs, apps, or a second device.
- A photo of your government ID and a selfie holding it, taken once at the start.
All of this is stored securely and reviewed only by BASU LEARN staff as part of verifying your assessment. It is never shared publicly or with students/institutes.
The steps before your first question
After you agree to the recording above, there are up to five short steps before questions appear. The on-screen step indicator always shows exactly where you are — depending on your assessment type, you may see fewer than five.
- Camera & microphone. Your browser will ask for permission — allow both. You can't continue without a working camera; if only your microphone fails, you can retry it separately without losing your camera connection.
- Position check — this is where people get stuck, so read carefully. You need to sit so your face, both shoulders, and both hands are all visible in the camera frame at once, then hold that position steady for a few seconds until every check turns green. Common fixes:
- Sit back from the camera rather than leaning in — this is usually what fixes “shoulders not visible”.
- Rest both hands on the table/desk, inside the camera's view, rather than in your lap.
- Face a light source (a window or lamp) rather than sitting with your back to one.
- Prop your laptop/webcam so it's roughly eye-level and pointed straight at you, not up or down.
You can practice this step beforehand as many times as you like. - Screen sharing. You'll be asked to share your entire screen — this stays on for the whole test.
- ID photo. You'll capture a clear photo of your government ID, review it, and confirm before it uploads.
- Selfie with your ID. Same idea — hold your ID next to your face so both are clearly visible, capture, review, and confirm.
Once every step is complete, “Start test” becomes active and the 45-minute clock begins.
Rules during the assessment
- Stay in frame the whole time — face, both shoulders and both hands visible, just like the position check.
- Don't switch tabs, open other apps, or use a second device — your screen recording and camera both watch for this.
- No one else should be in frame with you.
Leaving frame or being spotted with someone else triggers a warning. These build up as you go:
| Warning | What happens |
|---|
| 1st & 2nd | A brief on-screen reminder — the test continues uninterrupted. |
| 3rd | A message you must acknowledge before you can keep going. |
| 4th | A stronger final warning — one more will end your attempt. |
| 5th | Your assessment is automatically submitted as-is. |
A single accidental slip (adjusting your chair, a brief cough) is very unlikely to reach warning 3 — the system only counts a problem once it's continued for about a second, not a single frame.
What's allowed
- Rough paper and a pen for working things out.
- Thinking out loud — your microphone recording is a background check, not a speaking test.
- Taking your time on any question — there's no per-question timer, only the overall 45 minutes.
Questions and scoring
- Every question is chosen only from the subject(s) — or, for a mentor/counsellor assessment, the focus area — you registered for. You will never be asked about something you didn't select.
- The assessment adapts to your performance.
- You have up to 3 attempts in total.
Two sample questions, so you know the format, are at the bottom of this page.
If you don't clear it
- Admin will reschedule your next attempt — there's no fixed waiting period.
- Your next attempt uses a fresh set of questions you haven't seen before — there's no benefit to memorising this attempt's paper.
- Any registration documents or demo video you've already submitted stay on file — you won't need to redo those, only the assessment itself.
Your level
Clearing the assessment earns you a tutoring level from L2 to L5, based on your overall performance. Your level is visible to students and institutes browsing tutors on BASU LEARN, alongside your subjects and reviews.
Troubleshooting
“Camera is being used by another app”
Close anything else that might be using your camera — Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, another browser tab with a video call — then try again. Only one app can use a camera at a time.
My camera works but my microphone doesn't
You'll still see your camera preview, and a “Retry microphone” button will appear at the position-check step. The microphone is required, so you won't be able to move past that step until it's fixed — check it isn't muted or in use by another app, then retry.
The “Start test” button stays disabled
This means one of the earlier steps isn't fully complete yet. Check the step indicator near the top of the screen — it always names exactly which step you're still on (camera and mic both granted, position held steady, screen sharing granted, ID photo and selfie uploaded).
My internet drops mid-test
Every answer you select is saved to our server the moment you select it — not just at the end — so nothing you've already answered is lost. The 45-minute clock keeps running even while you're disconnected; it does not pause. Reconnect as quickly as you can — you'll be asked to quickly confirm your camera position again before continuing (this is allowed up to 3 times per attempt).
Final checklist
- Laptop or desktop, charged or plugged in, on a stable internet connection
- Government ID within reach
- Quiet, well-lit room, 45 uninterrupted minutes
- Camera and mic tested on the setup check
- Rough paper and a pen ready
